With the Tower of Pisa, the Pisan proposed a demonstration of wealth and culture of your town that, back then, was a major maritime powers of the Mediterranean. The tower, designed as a belfry, a member of the group called "Piazza dei Miracoli" along with the cathedral, baptistery and cemetery of the city. Construction work began in 1173, but was interrupted during the war against Florence, and after many recoveries and other delays caused by war, were complemented in 1319. In 1350 the bell was placed crowns the building. Tradition attributes the design of the tower to Bonanno Pisano. Many architects were involved, then in its construction.
The tower is 55.86 meters high. The outer diameter of the base is 15.48 meters and the interior, 7.36 meters. It has 6 floors and 294 steps to the belfry driving.
The Tower of Pisa began to tilt in 1183 when it was building the third floor, due to the collapse of the land on which it stood. Initially, the slope was 1.43 meters with respect to the vertical of the place. In 1997, this inclination reached 5.20 meters. It was closed to public access in 1990.
